What are cockroaches?

Of the 4,000 species of cockroaches living worldwide in our area, the German cockroach, Oriental cockroach, American cockroach, and brown-banded cockroach are most problematic for home and business owners in Las Vegas.

Cockroaches are a type of ancient insect species that has been around bothering people for eons. While most people only have negative thoughts about cockroaches, it is important to remember that there are benefits to cockroaches. When these large insects are not living in our homes or businesses, these scavengers help to reduce the amount of decaying plant and animal matter that is outside.

Cockroaches

Cockroaches have an oval-shaped body, wings, antennae, and six spiny legs. Most species are not great fliers and rely on their six spiny legs to scurry from place to place. Most species avoid light and hide during the day in dark, secluded areas, emerging at night to feed. If you are seeing cockroaches out during the day, it is an indicator of a large infestation that needs attention.

Are cockroaches dangerous?

Cockroaches are dangerous pests. E. coli, salmonella, dysentery, and other bacteria, pathogens, and parasites are spread by cockroaches. As soon as they find their way inside, they will begin to contaminate surfaces and food with the pathogens they carry on their legs, bodies, and in their saliva and excrement. Their presence also poses other health risks by triggering allergies and asthma attacks in people, particularly children.

Cockroaches, when gathered together, create a foul odor that becomes very unpleasant. This odor also affects the taste of food that is stored where cockroaches live. These scavengers also cause damage to personal property when living inside of our homes. Their excrement stains bedding, floors, walls, and other surfaces. They will chew through and damage furniture, books, papers, and more.

Why do I have a cockroach problem?

When it comes to cockroaches, the most important thing you need to remember is that they can find their way into any home or business. Having a high sanitary standard is helpful, but even the cleanest of structures are at risk for a cockroach infestation.

Cockroaches can move inside on their own while foraging for food sources. They move indoors through openings they discover in windows, doors, and exterior walls. Most species of cockroaches seek out areas of moisture, so things like clogged gutters, dripping faucets, and leaking hoses attract them.

Of course, easy access to food is another big attractant; open trash containers, compost, gardens, and pet food are found in most yards, and are places where cockroaches forage for food. Cockroaches are also introduced, into homes and businesses accidentally. These pests hitchhike inside in deliveries, grocery bags, on furniture, in appliances, or on the bottom of shoes. Once inside, they will make quick work of taking over your property.

Where will I find cockroaches?

Inside, cockroaches hide in a multitude of places. They tend to retreat from sources of light and like to hide during the day in dark, secluded areas. Kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and attics are areas of a home that cockroaches infest the most. They hide in cabinets, drawers, around sinks, pipes, drains, sump pumps, and other places near moisture. Some species like the brown-banded cockroach prefer hot, dry environments. You'll find these roaches in upper cabinets and attics.

Cockroaches are good at hiding and often are in a home or business for some time before the infestation becomes large enough that someone will notice. If you ever discover exoskeletons, droppings, or an odor that you cannot place in your home, immediately call for professional help.
